To kick-off this momentous event, Colorado Springs has designated May 10-14, 2010 as Ride Your Horse to Work Week in addition to National Tourism Week. Stay tuned to see which elected official plans to gallop up the steps of City Hall! A full calendar of events and every western-themed attraction in the area can be found at www.VisitCOS.com/western. Chug down the track this summer on the historic trains of the Pikes Peak region. From riding the world’s highest cog railway to the top of Pikes Peak, to enjoying a leisurely ride through the Royal Gorge while enjoying a gourmet meal, to exploring the history of our gold rush days on our coal-fired trains, Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region is a great spot for a railroad adventure. These locomotives won’t leave anyone disappointed.

This 8.9 mile trip lasts about three hours total. Passengers have a chance to see native wildlife such as bighorn sheep and yellow-bellied marmots. The trip runs year-round and even offers a special Santa Train December 4 – 24.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad located in nearby Canon City, CO is an adventure not soon forgotten. Take the trip alongside the waters of the Arkansas River and the deep geological walls forming the vast Royal Gorge. The Route Railroad travels under the impressive Royal Gorge Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in North America, for a different point of view. There’s always special events and tasty dining options whether it’s a lunch or dinner train, a murder mystery or wine dinner all guests will be delighted with the trip. Various cars are available. Hit the Concrete at Colorado’s 2nd Largest Skate Park

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Colorado Springs is now home to Colorado’s premier, professionally-designed destination skate park. In late December of 2008 Colorado Springs unveiled its newest project, the $1,000,000+ Skate Park at Memorial Park. This insane area of concrete is stretched over 40,000 square feet of competition-sized space and includes popular features such as bowls, a street course, backyard-style pool and a unique “hole-in-the-wall” feature. There is also an events plaza with a picnic pavilion and natural boulders for seating. The skate park has features for novice to expert inline skaters, bikers and skateboarders. The park was designed and constructed by professional skate park design firm Team Pain based out of Florida. In mid 2009 lights were added to illuminate the park for enjoyment at night. Not sure what the weather looks like? Take a look at the new weather cam near the park before getting there. The park is always free and open to the public.

The skate park was funded by a $120,000 grant from the Phil Long Community Fund and Denver Broncos Charities; $200,000 from Great Outdoors Colorado; $385,000 from the City’s TOPS (Trails, Open Space and Parks) account; and $460,000 from PLDO (Park Land Dedication Ordinance) funds. The Skate Friends of Colorado Springs, who were instrumental throughout the entire project, raised and contributed $20,000 toward the park’s construction.

The first official competition held at the skate park was the 2009 Concrete Rodeo Tour which will more than likely return for 2010!

Space Foundation

The 26th National Space Symposium, April 12-15, at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo., is shaping up to be bigger, better, and more specifically targeted to attendees’ individual needs than ever before. More than 8,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event, the premier gathering of the global space community.

More Networking

There will be ample time to meet and mingle on the floor of the AMERICOM Government Services (AGS) Exhibit Center, where you can talk with current and potential business associates. There are luncheons, receptions, and dinners where conversation and contacts are among the top priorities.

More Targeted Programs
In addition to the main agenda, the 26th National Space Symposium features special programs targeted to new generation space professionals and attendees with a specific interest in cyberspace, plus the programs for educators and students are richer than ever. And, for the first time, we’re working in partnership with Euroconsult, to present a panel on emerging space applications with a decidedly international flavor.

More Information
The 26th National Space Symposium agenda covers every aspect of space. Topics incude the new NASA budget proposal, the latest from Air Force Space Command, commercial space perspectives – U.S. and international, the intersection of space and cyber, Europe’s space ambition, congressional viewpoints, Wall Street’s take on space, the role of the National Reconnaissance Office (then and now), the space acquisition process, emerging space applications, space situational awareness and space debris, commercial space, words from the NASA administrator, and an examination of what inspires us fly.

More Influence
The slate of speakers is impressive: leaders from the military and industry, space entrepreneurs and explorers, policy makers and administrators, financiers, authors, astronauts, iconic actors, and up-and-coming space professionals. Big names on the agenda include: NASA Administrator Charles Bolden; NRO Director Bruce Carlson; private space traveler Richard Garriott; Air Force Space Command Commander Gen. C. Robert Kehler, USAF; Boeing Executive Vice President and Boeing Defense, Space & Security President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg; space journalist Miles O’Brien; George Washington University Space Policy Institute Professor of the Practice of International Affairs Director Dr. Scott Pace; and SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell. And, that’s just a fraction of the experts on the agenda.

More Stuff
The sold-out AMERICOM Government Services (AGS) Exhibit Center will feature top companies and organizations, showing off their products, services, and capabilities. Plus, if you’re lucky, you can grab some good swag before it runs out!

More Fun
As effective as the National Space Symposium is at getting business done, it’s not all work. There’s a little play, too. The Opening Ceremony will include a rousing performance by musical group Barrage. The Wednesday night hospitality events will give everyone an opportunity to relax. The Space Technology Hall of Fame® Dinner with feature iconic actor and  Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award winner Leonard Nimoy. And, a brand new event - a reception following Space Technology Hall of Fame® Dinner – will give all participants a chance to welcome new generation space professionals to the fold.

More Inspiration
A big part of the National Space Symposium is the inspiration attendees glean from the awards, including: the Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award, which goes to a Tennessee teacher who is inspiring students with astronomy and aviation; the John L. “Jack” Swigert, Jr., Award for Space Exploration, which goes to the LCROSS Mission for its historical confirmation of water ice on the Moon; the General James E. Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau Website Wins Top Honor

Monday, March 15th, 2010

VisitCOS.com is a 2009 Gold ADDY Award recipient for the consumer html category. Addy awards are presented by the Pikes Peak Advertising Federation to recognize excellence in advertising. The website was designed by Kiku Creative, developed and produced by Internet Honey and managed by Amy Long and Tracy Kocher of the Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB).

Award winners were announced during an award ceremony held on February 27th at the Antlers Hilton. “The effectiveness of an organization’s website is often determined by what the user has to say about it. You always hope for the best, and when the professionals of the Colorado Springs advertising community single you out for recognition and applause, that too is a special measurement of success. It’s a very meaningful accolade given to our organization and we thank all for this special recognition,” states CVB President and CEO Terrance W. Sullivan. Internet Honey Principal R.A. Burrell adds, “It was an honor to participate in this project, providing Internet Honey the opportunity to combine the best of breed in CRM technology, Display Advertising Services and Development Platforms for the Colorado Springs CVB.” This is the first step in the American Advertising Federation’s National Awards Competition, and the website design will now move on to regional competition. Manitou Springs, CO was the “original” spa destination attracting tuberculosis patients from all over the world who sought the healing powers of the natural mineral springs located throughout the area. The award-winning Five-Star Spa at The Broadmoor is known for it’s opulence. The spa services range from the anti-aging Fountain of Youth package to literally pampering the youth with the Teen Ice Cream Mani/Pedi complete with an actual choice of strawberry, chocolate or vanilla shake during the services. Winos will be pleased to hear that the Wine Down option is one of their most popular. The wine therapy line harnesses the anti-aging powers of the chardonnay grape seed and of course it comes with a glass of wine to complete the relaxation process. View a complete list of spa packages and pricing here.

The Spa at Garden of the Gods Club is another wonderful option for those looking to rejuvenate their mind, body and spirit.
