Kyana Miner, @blackadventuremom, is a Colorado-based travel blogger helping BIPOC families adventure more. With a family of four children, Kyana is an expert in finding family friendly activities and epic family adventures.
A perfect start to a day in Colorado Springs begins with breakfast at Urban Egg. This is a breakfast lovers dream because they have everything from pancake flights, gourmet sandwiches, speciality omelets, tacos, and burritos to healthy breakfast bowls.
Things to know – Urban Egg has four locations in Colorado Springs! Enjoy a delicious meal at the Briargate, Powers & Dublin, University Village, or Downtown location. Look at their menu!
Kyana, her husband Matt and their children Anaya, Ali, Amir and Aurora stayed at Great Wolf Lodge, home to an indoor water park, climbing wall, mini golf and more. Great Wolf is the perfect place to stay for families with younger children because they also have onsite entertainment, yoga, arts and crafts projects, story time, and photo ops with Great Wolf Kids characters.
Things to know – You can also book full or half day passes to get access to the water park and daily events without staying at the hotel. Check it out.
What's something guaranteed to keep the kids' attention? Bugs. With over 7,000 insects, the May Museum has one of the largest collections of tropical bugs in the world! The collection was started over 100 years ago with bugs from South America and Africa.
Things to know – Known as the Bug Museum to children and families in the area, the May Museum is open May 1 through October 1 each year. View their hours to make sure you don't miss this creepy crawly adventure.
Step into the quirky city of Manitou Springs, where every corner has something for the kids to explore. First stop, the Penny Arcade. This arcade is full of old games that will bring you back in time. With over 400 games from pinball, skeeball, pool, boxing machines, and a few newer games, all ages will enjoy the experience. While walking around Manitou Springs, you'll also get to taste the natural mineral springs around town, said to have healing powers.
Things to know – Each game varies in cost from $.01 to $1.50. The arcade is open year round, so you can't miss it!
It would be a crime to visit Colorado Springs without hiking, walking, driving or biking through Garden of the Gods. Kyana and family chose to hike the Siamese Twins loop, which is only 1 mile roundtrip! There are huge rocks to climb, rock towers (Siamese Twins) and beautiful views of Pikes Peak.
Things to know – Garden of the Gods has 21 miles of trails ranging from beginner to advanced in addition to being paved and dirt. Check out all the trails to choose your favorite.
Bear Creek is one of the most beloved natural areas in Colorado Springs. This escape from the city is filled with ten miles of trails, Bear Creek Dog Park, Bear Creek Nature Center, basketball courts, horseback riding, picnic pavilion, community garden and more. Kyana and family enjoyed collecting items from nature, then viewing them under a microscope at the nature center.
Things to know – Bear Creek Nature Center has year-round events for the public, including group hikes, learning workshops and family outdoor clubs. View their event schedule to join in on the fun!
The Exchange is the perfect vibe for anyone, especially a family relaxing after a long day of exploring Colorado Springs. The menu is huge and has everything from snacks, coffees and adult drinks to large lunch and dinner plates. Kyana's kids loved the plant-based grilled cheese sandwiches...so much that they went back to have them again!
Things to know – This coffee shop has one of the largest selection of baked goods that includes high-quality, house made gluten-free and vegan options. Browse their menu online.
The Space Foundation Discovery Center is the region's first and only space, science and technology attraction. Kyana and family explored the interactive attraction and learned about space exploration. Their favorite activity was the Mars Robotics Lab, where the kids got to drive rovers around Mars.
Things to know – Curious explorers of all ages will love walking through the interactive exhibits, learning about space gear, rockets, space shuttles and more. Check out the events they host to see what's happening during your trip.
Settle into a booth at Jax Fish House for a big family-style dinner. This is one of the best places to introduce your kiddos to fine, fishy dining. They even have a Maine Lobster Roll and Alaskan Halibut! Kyana's favorite was the Seared New England Scallops.
Things to know – Jax Fish House is consistently voted one of the best seafood restaurants in Colorado Springs. Check out their menu now and make a reservation.
