Colorado is a haven for avid outdoor enthusiasts with its diverse set of pristine landscapes and varied wildlife.
And with more than 23 million acres of public land and one of the biggest elk populations in the world, it’s easy to see why Colorado is such a popular hunting destination.
There are 10 big game species that can be hunted in the region including deer, elk, bear, moose and pronghorn. There are several resources to help guide your hunting excursion in the Pikes Peak region.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife offers a Big Game brochure which includes an identification page and is available online or in print from 750 licensed vendors throughout the state. Hunters must have a Hunter Education certificate before applying for or purchasing a Colorado hunting license. A Habitat Stamp is also required.
The brochure also details hunt codes (which are needed to apply or buy a license), as well as fees and other pertinent information to ensure that hunters are legally licensed and safe. To learn more about Big Game Licenses, visit Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
There will be more than 500,000 licensed big-game and small-game hunters in the field this fall. The season begins in late August for archery followed by muzzleloader and four rifle seasons.

Plan your stay at one of the area’s dude and guest ranches offering hunting, fishing and other recreational activities in some of Colorado’s most scenic landscapes. Before you head out for the hunt, hone your skills with Blanchard Shotgun Instruction or Magnum Shooting Center. Take lessons from professionals or simply rent out a lane. In either case, you’ll get some time behind the trigger and be better prepared for Colorado hunting.
