Community Partners Collaborate on Southwest Airlines® Beautification Projects
“Southwest® Loves Southeast” Endeavors to Benefit Local Community
Colorado Springs, Colo. – July 13, 2022 – On Saturday, June 18, Keep Colorado Springs Beautiful (KCSB) led volunteers in the planting of a new pollinator garden – the first of two Southwest® Loves Southeast projects.
The Southwest® Loves Southeast projects were developed by the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC, Visit Colorado Springs and other community partners and made possible by Southwest® to show dedication to the people of Colorado Springs.
“Since March 2021, Southwest Airlines has been an incredibly valuable addition to the community,” said Dani Barger, VP of Marketing & Communications at the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC. “These beautification projects are a way for Southwest to show support for Colorado Springs beyond their flights to and from the airport.”
“At Southwest Airlines, we believe community is more than a place, it’s at the Heart of what brings us together,” said Lexi Muller, Regional Manager of Community Outreach at Southwest Airlines. “We’re proud to partner alongside the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC, Visit Colorado Springs, and Keep Colorado Springs Beautiful to continue making Colorado Springs a better place to live, work and visit.”
The pollinator garden was designed by KCSB and is adjacent to Deerfield Hills Community Center. The existing community garden was enhanced with native pollinator plants and berries around the outer fence of the garden to increase the beneficial insect and bird population of the community garden. The planting event was made possible by many volunteers, including Colorado Springs City Council Member Yolanda Avila who represents District 4.
“Growing a garden creates opportunities to grow community and food for that community,” said Dee Cunningham, Executive Director of Keep Colorado Springs Beautiful. “When people and nature meet, magic happens.”
On Wednesday, July 20 at 10am, the community and media are invited to a dedication ceremony for the pollinator garden at 4290 Deerfield Hills Rd. Photos from the planting day can be found here.
The second Southwest® Loves Southeast project will be a community mural, which will also be in the southeast area of the city. Both the site and artist selection are pending. Five local artists submitted applications to create the mural. The goal is to complete this second project in the fall.
