Top Pickleball Competitors Face-Off in Colorado Springs
Regional Pickleball Tournament Returns to Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs, Colo, - Sept. 5, 2017 - Colorado Springs will host the 2017 USA Pickleball Association’s Great Plains Regional Pickleball Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Thursday through Sunday, over 400 players from the USA, Canada and Mexico will compete on Monument Valley Park’s pickleball courts for medals in singles, men’s and women's doubles and mixed doubles.
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The largest tournament in the USAPA Great Plains Region includes seven states and two Canadian Provinces. Competitors traveling to the region are expected to bring upwards of $500,000 in economic impact to the City.
On Friday, The Commander of the Canadian Element at Peterson Air Force Base will attend this year's inaugural "Honor Canada" day paying tribute to the region’s Canadian players and provinces. The Canadian Anthem will be sung as well as a display of the Canadian flag. Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers will open Saturday’s ceremonies with the largest draw of mixed competitors.
Several national pickleball champions will participate, including wheelchair pickleball play, showing spectators and other players the speed and agility of elite athletes in a sport they love. The public is invited to watch the tournament free of charge. Spectators will enjoy a variety of apparel, jewelry and onsite food vendors.
